Description: This pocket reference on math for nurses covers medication calculations expected of nurses administering medications.
Purpose: The purpose is 1) to help nurses learn to quickly and accurately calculate drug dosages in order to administer medications by various routes and 2) to serve as a quick reference or refresher when additional learning is required (such as for a nurse who hasn't done drug math for an extended period and needs to review or solve a new problem). The objectives are met, but the book does not need to be in handbook form. Practicing problems may be easier in a full-size book with tear-out worksheets so readers do not have to copy the whole problem. The website meets objective 1, but if a quick reference is needed, consulting the website takes too long.
Audience: The title implies the book is for nurses, but it can also be useful for nursing students and providers who need to check dosages by patient weight, especially IV medications. The authors are credible nursing faculty who are familiar with student learning styles.
Features: The title is clear: the book covers how to calculate medication dosages. It is a pocket guide for quick reference and includes drug preparation, such as reconstituting, in addition to calculations. It begins with basic math review and then progresses to the most difficult medication calculations. The step-by-step approach helps readers solve math problems. Chapters include a pre-test and post-test. A unique feature of the book is the inclusion of a pull-out reference card for fast access to basic equivalents, conversions, and formulas. Interestingly, there is also an appendix for calculating conversions from Celsius to Fahrenheit. Personally, I would just look that up on the internet. As the tenth edition, the only change seems to be the deletion of apothecary measurements. I think there is still some usefulness in leaving those, especially when they include grains.
Assessment: This is a good handbook for drug calculations. If I were the student or licensed nurse learner, I would have to have a notebook of blank paper to transfer the information and complete the math problems and pre- and post-tests. I know the objective of the book is to be a quick reference, but for nursing students it would be beneficial to print the book larger and have tear-out pages of the practice problems. The handbook is small so it is not easy to complete the math on the book pages. Drug math books are always in demand and updates are probably only needed for the administration techniques because the math stays the same.
