Description: Intended as a supplemental study guide for nursing students, this book breaks down the topic of pharmacology into the most important information. It provides an easy way for students to study and retain information. The previous edition was published in 2012.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students with an easy way to study and retain information about pharmacology. It emphasizes the most important points to remember and to understand. The book meets the objective with more than 700 pages of clear and concise information.
Audience: This book is intended primarily for nursing students, but anyone studying pharmacology such as medical students or physician assistants, can benefit from it.
Features: It covers all drug classes, some basic physiology related to specific drug classes, how to administer drugs, and assessment findings pertinent to the drug. It also considers nursing interventions and reiterates key points. It uses cartoons to help identify potential problems that might exist with a medication, and includes patient education information. The glossary is short and, perhaps, not needed.
Assessment: From a faculty perspective, I understand that students learn in a variety of ways. However, if students knew how to take class notes properly, this book would not be needed. Therefore, the value of this book depends on the learning style of the student — it would not appeal to all nursing students.
