This is a very basic anatomy and physiology textbook written with the goal of teaching this information in an interesting and often humorous manner. The aim is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of human anatomy and physiology in preparation for more advanced classes such as pharmacology and medical-surgical nursing. Essential background information is presented, such as selected principles of basic chemistry, which are necessary to appreciate more complex physiologic concepts, such as acid-base balance. The information is organized as a progression from basic to more complex (for example, from the cell to organ systems). Some pathophysiology is integrated to accentuate physiologic concepts. This book is designed for students preparing for healthcare careers who have had little or no prior preparation in the sciences. Features include numerous high-quality illustrations, learning objectives, and a glossary of key terms to introduce each chapter, and a summary outline and study questions to close each chapter. Within the chapters, there are numerous boxes entitled ""Do you know..."" that provide interesting information and trivia to help students remember and appreciate the physiologic concepts presented. The idea of developing a truly interesting and concise but complete anatomy and physiology textbook for students without a science background is wonderful -- and needed. This textbook comes very close. There are, however, many small, but fundamental errors. For example, ATP is presented as having two high-energy bonds instead of only one; the enzyme renin is referred to as a hormone; and ammonia, a freely diffusable gas, is identified as a substance activelysecreted in the renal tubule. Still, this basic textbook is interesting and enjoyable to read; the authors just need to revise it to improve the accuracy of some of the information.

Description: This foundational textbook of human anatomy and physiology covers all body systems and related information. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose: The author's purpose is to provide basic and clinically relevant anatomy and physiology content that can be mastered in a short period of time. These are indeed worthy objectives given the enormous amount of information that health career students must master. This edition admirably fulfills these objectives.
Audience: The author explicitly states this book is for students with minimal science background who are preparing for a career in the health professions. While limited to the most necessary content, it nevertheless gives the student enough of a start to delve deeper if desired. This edition is preceded by two successful versions attesting to the author's ability and credibility.
Features: The book is well developed and explains human anatomy and physiology in a readable simple-to-complex format. Numerous illustrations enhance understanding. Each chapter concludes with a summary outline and a brief self-test so students can assess their learning. Of special note are the fun to read side notes that offer additional insight into the material. Although there are no photographs, the book is nonetheless readable and understandable.
Assessment: Overall this is a fun and interesting textbook of anatomy and physiology. It is very well suited for beginning college level students building the foundation for a career in health care.
