Description: The editors have produced an absolutely extraordinary account of Fraud and Misconduct in Biomedical Research. The book is a grim historical account of some of the earlier cases of misconduct, and the struggle that the research community experienced in understanding and responding to these cases. This fourth edition provides newer information and more complete details of some of the cases included in previous editions.
Purpose: The preface begins with a telling statement: "It is with some regret that a fourth edition of this book still has relevance today." The editors note that in today's competitive environment for research funds, this discussion is necessary. They and the contributors have produced an invaluable work and are to be commended on their efforts.
Audience: This is a book for everyone involved in research — new students, accomplished researchers, support staff, ethics and institutional review board members — all have something to learn. The editors and contributors are all experienced publishers and researchers; the editors have brought together an exquisite and knowledgeable faculty.
Features: The book provides a historical background to research misconduct in the United States, the United Kingdom, and in other countries, outlining how this is not a problem isolated to one nation or culture, but ubiquitous in some measure. The authors outline possible approaches to controlling the problem through computer software, monitoring systems, audits, and investigations. They conclude with thoughts for future advisory boards. It is a most complete and interesting analysis.
Assessment: This is an absolute necessity for every library at institutions where researchers work and interact. It lays out the problems and temptations which every researcher faces and must work through. The additional information and slightly altered approach is a most worthy addition.
