Description: This book is an extensive review of basic math to help students calculate dosages for a variety of medications including intravenous medications. It begins with basic math (fractions, decimals, ratios), discusses safety in medication administration, and then shows different ways to solve math problems for calculating dosages for oral medications and parenteral medications including IV medications. There is a glossary and, of course, hundreds of practice problems.
Purpose: The authors state that the book is intended to teach students how to calculate dosages for a variety of medications. There are students who have taken basic college algebra, but maybe a few years in the past. Higher level math isn't necessary for most of the medication calculations. Since most math is done with pencil and paper, this book is more like a workbook and answers are actually written in the book.
Audience: The intended audience is any students or even graduates who will be calculating dosages of medications to administer to patients or to write prescriptions for patients. The preface notes the audience is "students in professional and vocational schools of nursing and nurses returning to practice after being away from the clinical setting."
Features: The title describes the content of the book: calculation of drug dosages — simple and to the point. The best parts of the book are the worksheets that include practice problems. The answers to the problems are in the back of the book and include how to get to the answer. That is great!
Assessment: It should be noted that basic math does not change. If updates to books in this area are done, it is usually to add information, change the teaching/learning format, or add ancillary activities. This update likely only adds online resources and perhaps a few tables and some color images. However, I like this book and would choose it over other books like Calculate with Confidence, 7th edition, Morris (Elsevier, 2018), or Dimensional Analysis for Meds: Refocusing on Essential Metric Calculations, 5th edition, Curren (Jones & Bartlett, 2020). This is a larger book than either of those and includes a lot more.
