Description: This is the 11th edition of this venerated reference on clinical diagnosis from interpretation of diagnostic tests. It comes in a (hefty) paperback version and an ebook version. The previous edition was published in 2015.
Purpose: The purpose is to emphasize the accurate and efficient use of laboratory testing for clinical diagnosis. The ebook provides added value — easily searchable, adjustable font and figure size, easy highlighting, and the ability to immediately create flash cards from the highlighted sections. The worthy objectives are well met by both the book and ebook.
Audience: The intended audience is "primary care physicians, subspecialists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and medical and nursing students." Of course, the book also would be useful to laboratory medicine and/or pathology residents early in their training, or for fellows who have come to laboratory medicine through a nonpathology/laboratory medicine pathway. The book definitely meets the needs of the intended audience.
Features: What I really like about this book are the logical sequencing and clear and concise discussions. It is not a thorough reference containing every nuance of any laboratory test, but it is a great global overview of specific tests. A single 448-page chapter discusses a few hundred of the more commonly performed tests, with each test discussion following a standard format of definition, clinical use, interpretation and limitations, and rarely exceeding a single page. This is concise and clear at its best. The remaining 14 chapters are focused on disease states in various organ systems, again following a very standard format of the disease definition, when the disease should be suspected, and relevant laboratory findings. Simple features such as coloring the edge of the pages for each chapter to allow fast access to the chapter of interest are great.
Assessment: This has been a great reference for laboratory medicine, and this edition carries on its tradition of excellence. The ebook alone adds tremendous value — excellent content at the tips of your fingers. Get it.
