This large book surveys current research in vitamin E in six sections, each with many chapters contributed by researchers from different disciplines, laboratories, and countries. The sections include studies of vitamin E's occurrence, role in cell biology, pharmacology, effects in pathophysiological conditions, medical applications, and future perspectives. The authors' intent to present current knowledge, with emphasis on information gained during the last decade, appears well implemented and wide-ranging in scope. This book is intended for biochemists, physiologists, pharmacologists, and public health workers. It should interest nutritionists and cell biologists as well. Although it presents a comprehensive, detailed overview of vitamin E research, it could also serve as an interesting introduction for students and experienced researchers. This book possesses easy-to-read type and clear black-and-white illustrations and photographs. The index is comprehensive and usable. References are usually dated up to 1989-1990. Studies are presented of the effects of vitamin E in acute clinical conditions such as ischemia-reperfusion injury, in slowing the course of chronic and degenerative diseases, and in drug therapy. Biochemical studies of the vitamin's interaction with cells, cell membranes, and cell components are well represented. The book meets the objectives stated by the authors. This comprehensive description of research in vitamin E, conveniently assembled in a single volume, would be a good acquisition for a library or for the specialist and would be informative reading for the student.
