Purpose: The purpose is to provide information about recent breakthroughs in vitamin A research to basic scientists in the field as well as to interested clinicians, dieticians, epidemiologists, and public health workers. The explosion of new information on the cell and molecular biology of vitamin A and its potential implications for clinical medicine makes this a most timely monograph. These objectives are met by this collection of excellent reviews of current research.
Audience: The primary audiences are basic scientists engaged in vitamin A research and graduate students in biochemistry and cell biology. Secondary audiences are clinicians, dieticians, epidemiologists, and public health workers interested in vitamin A nutrition and clinical uses of vitamin A. The chapters are written by an outstanding group of international authorities in the field.
Features: The book is enhanced by many good quality black-and-white figures, although there is considerable variation in the use of illustrations in the individual chapters. Each chapter contains numerous references, including many from the 1990s. The time required for publication, however, necessitates that the most current research references are not included. The table of contents and index are adequate.
Assessment: This monograph provides outstanding reviews of recent research in vitamin A by an international group of excellent basic and clinical scientists. The emphasis is on cell and molecular biology, but appropriate coverage is given to clinical topics. As is common in multiauthored books, there is some overlap among chapters. The book will be a valuable resource for basic scientists and clinicians interested in this rapidly expanding field.

The volume is organized according to the metabolism of vitamin A; the mechanism of action of vitamin A and the provitamin A carotenoids; and the role of retinoids in embryonic development, skin and epithelial cells, blood cells, vision, and reproduction.
