Description: This book offers interactive cases that review the interpretive accuracy as well as the clinically relevant findings associated with most vascular and interventional radiological diagnoses and treatments today. The accompanying website offers an online version of the same cases with the addition of hyperlinks throughout the comments and reference sections. This third edition contains new cases that illustrate updated and current interventional techniques. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The purpose is to showcase the numerous diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed by interventional radiologists, while also detailing the proper clinical evaluation and treatment of patients.
Audience: This is intended to expand trainees' (residents') exposure to the broad spectrum of diagnoses and procedures in interventional radiology to stimulate them to explore the possibilities of subspecializing in the field. The book will be helpful for general radiologists who must be able to convey to referring physicians or colleagues a fundamentally mature procedure-related clinical judgment. The lead editor is a professor of radiology and the director of vascular and interventional radiology at the University of Michigan Health Care System.
Features: The book covers basic and pertinent imaging of a wide range of arterial, venous, oncology, and portal hypertension cases, as well as nonvascular procedures and their impact on various disease processes. However, preprocedural preparation, postprocedural management, and intraprocedural complications are not well covered. A valuable feature for readers is the inclusion of newer procedures that have been adopted within the last year. Many similar case-review books do not include some of these newer techniques, shown across a variety of modalities as is seen here. The multiple-choice, question-and-answer format with accompanying image(s) and short comment section is another great feature. This format lends itself well to exposing readers to a wide variety of cases in a concise manner, without bogging them down with a lot of clinical and pathophysiological minutiae. Trainees get exposed to a broad range of pathology in digestible, retainable increments.
Assessment: The quality of the images, chosen cases, and procedures reviewed in this book is appropriate. The cases are offered in a progressive manner, from well-known diagnoses and procedures to more challenging procedures and techniques later on. The cases are presented in an especially thought-provoking, yet straightforward manner, which allows readers to grasp the pertinent key points from each case. The pairing of the book and website does not offer a particular advantage, as the online offering mostly mirrors the print book. This edition has updated cases and procedures that are as current as 2015, which is five years later than the prior edition. As the field of interventional radiology continues to evolve, updates in the literature are pertinent in order to keep the intended audience keyed in to the changes and new advances in the field. This book is similar to other case review titles in this specialty with the advantage that it is likely slightly more relevant than others that have not been updated since 2015.
