Description: This is a compilation of middle-range and situation-specific transition theories in nursing research and practice. In the various studies, transitions are identified and measured with various populations such as individuals, groups, families, partners, organizations, students, nurses, faculty members, and/or administrators.
Purpose: The editor describes three goals for this book: first, to answer the global requests for early transition literature to serve as a framework for research and practice; second, to fulfill the anticipated increase in interest in the Transition Model due to the recent development of the New Cortland Center for Transitions and Health Research at the University of Pennsylvania; and third, to set an example of theoretical and research coherence for readers who might want to do the same with other central concepts.
Audience: The editor suggests a wide range of readers, including undergraduate students studying the philosophical underpinnings of nursing as well as advanced graduate students working on theory development. Clinicians also could use this book to enhance the use of evidenced-based care, and researchers could use it to continue work on transition theory development and evaluation. Finally, faculty can use it to help them develop syllabi for theory courses and policy makers can use it for the development of care models.
Features: The 11 chapters are grouped into five sections: Transitions from Practice to Evidence-Based Models of Care, Transitions as a Nursing Theory, The Experience of and Responses to Transitions, Nursing Therapeutics, and an Epilogue with frequently asked questions. Among the 54 articles are studies on migration and immigrant health, role transitions, and situational events such as evolving chronic disease.
Assessment: It is very exciting to see all of these studies compiled in one book. Readers can go through it sequentially or focus on certain transitions. It also can be used as a template for a compilation of other concepts central to nursing and serve as a resource for further studies in transitions. It is an excellent addition to the nursing literature.
