Description: This is the first edition of a broad description of multidisciplinary care for the patient with upper GI disorders. It includes an approach to these diseases from both the diagnostic and procedural points of view.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a view of comprehensive care of current and evolving upper GI diseases.
Audience: Practicing surgeons as well as residents in training are the intended audience.
Features: The book covers all upper GI disorders involving the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, and spleen. It does not include the liver or biliary tree. Each chapter begins with aims, by a discussion of specific topics. The chapter ends with several questions for consideration by the reader. There are extensive references with each chapter. Also included were radiographs and photographs in black and white and occasional manometry figures. The text is scattered with tables and drawings.
Assessment: Each chapter is well written and comprehensive. The content flows well and leads the reader to logical understanding and conclusions from the point of view of the authors. Although I had expected that a lack of pictures would be detrimental, it was not because of the well crafted content. This book could be read in several evenings and leave the reader with extensive knowledge on upper GI diseases. It is a worthy addition to the literature.
