Overview

The second of a series of EPs that will essentially constitute the fourth album by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, This Is the Place is anchored on its title track: a dense piece of psychedelic disco-rock. The tone relaxes for "A Dream Is All I Need to Get By," which glides by on a sweet melody and slight Baroque touches, but the tempo cranks back up for "Evil Flower," which pulsates to a dark synth loop and elastic bass. "Evil Flower" feels like a B-side, getting by on vibe and groove, but "This Is the Place," with its insinuating rhythms and elongated melody, is a low-key charmer and among the best fusions of dance and rock Gallagher has yet made. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
