Overview

Test-based psychological assessment has been significantly affected by the health care revolution in the United States during the past two decades. Description: This is a needed update of this widely popular book as the practice of mental health is continuously affected by managed care, less time, and less resources. This volume 1 of the 3-volume set serves as not only a primer for the other two volumes, but as a stand-alone teaching tool.
Purpose: The purpose of the revised edition is to provide the necessary updates for an ever-changing practice environment. However, as in the first and second editions, the need for a comprehensive source for how to use test results for planning, monitoring, and assessing the outcomes of psychological interventions continues to be the main focus. The objective is to provide clinicians, who have mastered the basic skills, a way to further develop and/or expand upon their testing knowledge. The book exceeds expectations.
Audience: The book is intended for clinicians and graduate students in psychology and to some degree medicine. These volumes are clearly excellent teaching tools and a comprehensive resource. The author is highly credible and contributes substantially to the field with this three-volume set.
Features: Volume 1 is truly the foundational piece of this third edition. Chapters such as Screening for Psychiatric Disorders, Use of Psychological Tests/Instruments for Treatment Planning, and Ethics Concerns in Outcomes Assessment are well-written, focused, and meets the needs of today's clinicians. The discussions of tests and models are current and focus on the use, predictability, and implementation of these tests.
Assessment: The field is inundated with many books. However, what separates a good book from the not so good is ultimately the utility that it has for the field. This book is the epitome of a worthwhile contribution to the field.
