Dziga Vertov, whose 1929 documentary depicts a day in the life of a Soviet city, has been classed by some film historians with the European modernist avant-garde. Roberts, however, sees him as a filmmaker committed to a political position as well as to a rigorously thought-out documentary practice. Roberts (Leeds U.) argues that is an affirmation of the Stalinist policies about to unfold: to "crush resistance in the countryside, urbanize, industrialize, purge opposition." His analysis includes a close textual reading of the film, a deconstruction of its architecture, and an exploration of the film's (and Vertov's) reputation in the following decades. No subject index.
