This text provides the rationale for the use of creativity and the arts to face grief. Inventive ideas and examples of their use provide the reader with a great resource for this type of intervention.
Purpose: The purpose is to help clinicians face up to the reality of grief and to delineate appropriate interventions to facilitate the grieving process for patient and families. Clinicians have long accepted that grief is a unique experience. By utilizing different art media, this uniqueness can be channeled into a positive and constructive force.
Audience: The focus is on clinicians involved in the care of individuals confronting their mortality. The reading level and theoretical framework presented make it an excellent text for the advanced clinician and graduate student. The contributors in each section of the book have extensive experience in the area of end-of-life care.
Features: From music to art to fairy tales, this book is an interesting look into the way death has been viewed and presented by our different cultures. Drawing from this historical and present perspective, in the second part of the text the focus is on practical applications of creative caregiving. The text and style are advanced and best directed at advanced clinicians and educators.
Assessment: This book is interesting and informative but may be seen as too advanced for the average clinician.
