Description: This book, edited from the proceedings of a symposium held by the Federation of European Microbiological Societies, is the second attempt to publish a comprehensive treatise on Aspergillus. The earlier effort was published in 1977 by the British Mycological Society. This book primarily deals with three major aspects, namely, industrial, agricultural, and pathogenic roles of Aspergillus. The first two topics are extensively dealt with, whereas less emphasis is given to the third aspect.
Purpose: The objective is to present a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the fungal genus Aspergillus covering areas of taxonomy, molecular genetics, medical pathology, and industrial fermentation.
Audience: There was a great need for such a book, and this is intended to fill the lacuna by serving a wider readership covering taxonomists, fermentation chemists, biologists, geneticists, agriculturists, medical students, and scientists. All of the contributors to this book are leaders in their respective fields.
Features: The moderate number of tables, charts, and figures included in the book are pertinent, although some of the glossy illustrations are substandard and could have been improved. The references are adequate and mostly current. The authors did a good job of keeping the format of the individual chapters uniform and readable. The glossary could have been extended. The appearance of the book is good.
Assessment: This is a very useful book for students in mycology and microbiology, fermentation technology, and biochemistry, and for industrial and agriculture scientists, veterinary students, and physicians. Because of the unique focus and coverage, this is a very good addition to the library and for students and scientists interested in Aspergillus
