Overview

The Devil Whispers Temptations, a poem collection from new writer John Carlson.
The topics of depression, love, and mental health compound into a self-analysis of the emotions we all face in our early twenties. The collections of poems written over the course of a year slowly show a deterioration in mental health, replacing hopeful love poems with nihilistic introspection. Passages written on days of clarity quickly dissolve into feeding the Devil's whispers in our heads, leading us down a path of self-destruction and disdain for social expectations and extroverted relationships. Carlson expresses these emotions in their rawest form confronting the temptations of suicide and love while using writing as his means to display the struggles of his life.

About the Author

At 20 years old, John Carlson of Fallbrook, California, began writing personalized poetry for friends and family. Quickly though, this became his outlet for displaying his emotions, to which his surprise resonated within his circle of friends. Carlson then began writing about mental health, philosophy, spirituality, love, and death. While in college, his time would be spent studying various Greek, Arabian, and eastern philosophies. The time spent examining transformed his writing to convey situations and emotions in a reflective analysis while using Buddhism, Daoism, and Taoism principles. Time spent with his Grandmother and Great Grandmother, both of whom immigrated from China, allowed him to understand social cultures from the east, inspiring him to travel the world. At such a young age, John manifests a unique understanding of the world and people, allowing his writing to convey emotions and desires that so many of us cannot put to words.
