Description: This book provides a refreshing and novel discussion surrounding the development and chronicity of anxiety. The book discusses the major factors that contribute to anxiety in childhood and throughout one's life.
Purpose: The purpose is to integrate current research and theory on the major factors that predispose one to anxiety as well as the factors that maintain, ameliorate, and can even be protective against anxiety in childhood. These are worthy objectives and quite beneficial on many levels.
Audience: Targeted at clinicians and researchers, readers will have no difficulty in applying the information in their everyday work. The contributing authors are unquestionably credible, the writing is clear, concise, and a true representation of the quality which is contained in this book.
Features: The book is broken down into three sections. The first discusses the developmental psychopathology and the variations contained within anxiety disorders. The second section explores the predisposal, protective, maintenance, and ameliorating influences. The third and final section discusses the integrative models of childhood anxiety problems. Highlights include the the chapters on prevention strategies, post-traumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Tables and figures help to illustrate the major points in the book, and the index is quite helpful.
Assessment: This excellent book stands apart from other works which are not as thorough nor as in-depth regarding the developmental processes of anxiety. The contributing authors have chosen to write a much needed book on anxiety starting at the very beginning in childhood and following through the life span. This is a terrific addition to the field, and recommended without reservation.
