Description: This is an update of the 2007 first edition that compiles the latest research data and expert opinions about the psychological, biological, and social responses to various disasters.
Purpose: The authors correctly point out that there has been an increase of various types of disasters in every part of the world. Because of this stark reality, the authors' purpose is to describe how to properly prepare, respond, and intervene on behalf of those affected by disasters in order to minimize the amount of resultant mental illness. This book is necessary, given the prediction of the increased rates of both natural and human-made disasters, and the authors meet their objectives with this comprehensive analysis.
Audience: The authors indicate that due to the "...comprehensive examination of disaster and its impact" this book has "...broad clinical and public health relevance," but do not specifically identify a target audience. Because of the subject, this book is appropriate for a broad audience ranging from psychiatrists and social workers to military personnel, safety officers, and policy makers whose jobs involve work in various disaster situations. The authors have called on experts in various areas from throughout the world as contributors.
Features: The book's five sections begin with an introduction. Part 2 establishes the foundation of disaster psychiatry, part 3 reviews different treatment interventions, and part 4 reviews particular topics including the impact of the media, terrorism, nuclear disaster, ethical issues, and various special needs for particular populations. The final section reviews public health issues. Each chapter begins with an introduction, has various helpful graphics, and ends with a conclusion and references. An index concludes the book.
Assessment: Clinical Manual for Management of PTSD, Benedek and Wynn (American Psychiatric Association Publishing, 2011), is more focused on PTSD and therefore more practical for clinicians treating patients with PTSD. This book is broader in its coverage and therefore will be of practical value to more individuals, but only those who have a particular interest in very specific topics and, thus, it is not as widely practical for general clinicians. Nonetheless, I found myself learning things that will undoubtedly be helpful when interacting with patients who have experienced various disasters, and the book has given me as better overall understanding of the various complications from traumatic situations.
