This book explores the pivotal role played by technology over the past decade in advancing global public health and health care. At present, the global community faces unprecedented healthcare challenges fueled by an aging population, rising rates of chronic disease, and persistent health disparities. About the Author

Padmini Murthy, MD, MPH, MS, FAMWA, FRSPH, is professor and global health director at New York Medical College, School of Health Sciences and Practice, in Valhalla, New York, USA. Dr. Murthy is Medical Women’s International Associations Secretary - General and NGO representative to the United Nations. She is also Global Health lead of American Medical Women’s Association and a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.

Amy Ansehl, DNP, RN, MSN, FNP-BC, is associate dean for Student Experience at New York Medical College, School of Health Sciences and Practice, in Valhalla, New York, USA. She is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and Chairperson of the Visiting Nurse Service Westchester Foundation.

Description: This book covers simple to complex technology used to address public health issues around the world. The breadth of issues touched on in a variety of settings provides useful information for professionals and community members. The text invites replication of successful interventions in similar contexts, while also sharing challenges, lessons learned, and areas needing further research. Innovative programs and use of technology discussed may spark the readers' ideas for ingenuity in other areas as well.
Purpose: The editors' stated purpose is to take the reader on an explorative journey of existing technologies that hold promise to reduce global health disparities and unite the global community in the positive use of technology for health improvement. Additionally, the negative consequences of technology, whether unintentional or with malicious intent, are also discussed to increase awareness among the global community with a call to make every effort to thwart the negative outcomes of technology. These are worthwhile objectives that the editors and contributing authors have met by providing background information pertinent to the topics presented and reflections on how technology and innovative programs have empowered communities for better health.
Audience: The intended audience for the book is not specified; however, given the interdisciplinary nature of the contributors, range of public health issues addressed, and various technology discussed, there is truly something for everyone interested in the most pressing public health issues of our day. The global community is well represented by credible authorities on the subject, including recognized experts and professionals with the appropriate credentials and experience to provide valuable contributions.
Features: This text covers technologies borrowed from other industries that have proven beneficial to salient public health concerns and vulnerable populations who suffer health inequities due to social determinants of health. Universal health coverage, underrepresentation of women and girls in STEM, social media, telehealth and e-health initiatives, social maladies, digital access, health systems, and responses to disasters are discussed while reflecting on the impact of interventions on quality of life for those affected. Sustainable development goals (SDGs) are highlighted in terms of how technology and innovation address SDGs, and future directions with recommendations for research and practice. Overall, the material is well written, reader-friendly, and well organized. While minimal colored graphics and photographs are included, they enhance the readers' experience where used. The presentation of innovative interventions using technology ranges from awareness and education campaigns to robotics. What is missing are any updates reflecting the currently ongoing global pandemic's effects on continued programs, as well as future research and new concerns.
Assessment: A few typos notwithstanding, the quality and content of the book is good. The text will prove useful to the global community engaging in public health, such as professionals, activists, and participants. In comparison to various other titles pertaining to technology and health, which often focus on informatics, project management, or a narrow context, readers of this text will appreciate the focus on empowerment and resolving health inequities.
