Preface

The number of clinical laboratory techniques, automated instruments, and analyses continues to escalate, increasing the demand for proper collection of patient laboratory specimens. Since the majority of laboratory errors occurs in the preanalytical phase, it is essential that health care students and practitioners who are responsible for blood and specimen collections (i.e., phlebotomists, clinical laboratory technologists and technicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and others) have an in-depth knowledge of their professional responsibilities. National board certification in phlebotomy is required by many health care institutions, clinics, and physicians' offices as a result of federal, safety, and quality assurance requirements. In addition, the rationale for phlebotomy state licensure is gaining momentum across the nation. Because of these laws and to ensure high-quality patient care, continuing education in phlebotomy safety and quality assurance has become paramount.

These important events in the responsibilities of blood collection have served to shape the fifth edition of Prentice Hall Health Q&A Review for Phlebotomy. It has been designed to act as a study companion for those who are (1) preparing for national or state board certification/licensure examinations and/or (2) pursuing self-assessment in blood collection.

Prentice Hall Health Q&A Review for Phlebotomy, Fifth Edition, includes over 650 multiple-choice questions as a means to the overall review of blood collection, handling, and transportation. The chapters in this book are sequenced to match the order in Phlebotomy Handbook:Blood Collection Essentials, Fifth Edition. The questions and answer content are divided into the following major sections:

  • An overview of the roles and functions of phlebotomists in the health care industry and the basics of anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on the circulatory system.
  • Safety and infection control in the workplace and the documentation and transportation procedures needed for safe handling of biohazardous specimens.
  • Equipment and procedures with the most updated questions and information about blood collection equipment.
  • Special procedures and point-of-care testing, including information about pediatric phlebotomy procedures, arterial and IV collections, and special considerations for the elderly, homebound, and long-term care patients.
  • Quality and legal issues, including quality management issues for blood and specimen collection services and legal issues important to phlebotomy practice.

Each chapter includes chapter objectives as a guide and an added feature of knowledge levels for each question. After the reader learns the essential topics in the Phlebotomy Handbook: Blood Collection Essentials, Fifth Edition, he or she can review them through the questions and answers presented in this book. Alternatively, this book may stand alone as a review book because it contains explanatory answers and the added feature of explanations for incorrect answers. These answers are all referenced to pages in the Phlebotomy Handbook: Blood Collection Essentials, Fifth Edition, so that the reader can obtain additional information on the question topic. This review book incorporates updated illustrations of blood collection equipment and techniques as bases for questions to help sharpen the phlebotomy skills. Also, a CD is included with the review book, containing color figures related to the questions and answers.

Using the book will assist the reader in identifying areas of relative strength and weakness in the command of phlebotomy skills and responsibilities. After reviewing the multiple-choice questions and answers, the reader can practice taking a simulated examination provided on the accompanying CD. A diagnostic report identifies those topics that need further review and study.

Prentice Hall Health Q&A Review for Phlebotomy, Fifth Edition, Phlebotomy Handbook: Blood Collection Essentials, Fifth Edition, and the Instructor's Guide are major national and international references for health care providers' educational programs, hospitals, physicians' offices, clinics, national examination boards, and legal issues in blood collection.
