Description: Substance use and abuse permeates every facet of healthcare and we, as clinicians, struggle with the complicated presentations that substance use can add in patients with preexisting mental illness. In this volume in the Advances in Psychotherapy series, the author provides an excellent primer for understanding substance use.
Purpose: In keeping with the series, this book seeks to increase clinicians' awareness and access to empirically supported interventions for substance use. Notably, the author provides an excellent examination of comorbid conditions and presents an unbiased biopsychosocial model. This is not only an excellent primer, but also an excellent refresher for seasoned clinicians.
Audience: There is no limit to the audience for this book as substance use impacts all aspects of the delivery of healthcare.
Features: As with all of the books in this series, this one provides a strong background, complete with terminology and definitions. All readers will appreciate the emphasis on the biopsychosocial model and the examination of comorbidities such as depression, bipolar, ADHD, and the personality disorders. Diagnostics and assessment are covered quite nicely as are the various treatment modalities. The only disappointment is the lack of a case vignette and case example that would have summed up the material quite nicely. The appendix contains two helpful scales for assessment and follow-up (Inventory of Drug Use Consequences and Shortened Inventory of Problems).
Assessment: Overall, this solid addition to the field is recommended.
