Description: This text is an exploration of all aspects of nursing contact with substance use and misuse. The healthcare provider's response to, and management of, the clinical situation of substance use/misuse is carefully described and developed to promote appropriate treatment.
Purpose: This text is an introduction to issues in working with substance misuse and assists in understanding its extent and nature. Treatment frameworks are included with descriptions of the historical nature and the span of influence of this problem, and the current concerns of substance misuse. Each objective is carefully fulfilled.
Audience: The audience for this text includes students, nursing clinicians, and other healthcare providers. Each group will find this book enormously helpful when confronted with the inevitable combination of substance misuse and a healthcare problem. The editor and contributors are active nursing clinicians with internationally recognized credentials.
Features: This text contains wonderful descriptions of the critical features and presentation of this clinical problem along with identification and formulation of treatment options in each specialty area of nursing. The case vignettes and the perspectives of clinical nurses are especially eloquent in creating a paradigm about substance misuse in the clinician's mind. There are shortcomings: U.K. versus U.S. statistics are cited, and these are interesting but not overly useful for the U.S. practitioner, and the references tend to be slightly older than the usual clinically accepted five years. Still, these are insignificant in comparison to the larger benefit to be gained by readind this book. The table of contents is very detailed. The foreword skillfully summarizes the direction and impact of this book.
Assessment: This book is an especially useful primer and resource for all nursing and healthcare specialties, but is an essential text for psychiatric nursing students and practitioners. Few books are available on this topic and none have represented the entire clinical issue as well.
