Overview

Sleep disorders exact a high toll on society in terms of diminished quality of life, reduced productivity and cost to medical services. Description: This is a review for nonspecialists of the basics of normal sleep as well as the evaluation and management of sleep disturbances.
Purpose: The goal of the book is to provide an easy to read summary of normal sleep architecture and the stages of sleep in addition to the most common sleep disorders (i.e. insomnias, hypersomnias, parasomnias, etc.).
Audience: Healthcare professionals who are not sleep specialists, such as neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, pulmonologists, and internists, are the intended audience. The book is also appropriate for residents who have a particular interest in sleep medicine.
Features: The book's useful algorithms and other clinical pointers make it very practical for clinical application. Each chapter includes diagnostic criteria for specific disorders as well as pitfalls to avoid. Summary learning points conclude each topic section for improved retention of the material. The authors make nice use of graphics and flow charts as well. More specialized sections discuss sleep disturbances in the context of psychiatric, neurologic, and medical disorders. The book is clearly written and not overly burdened with incomprehensible jargon.
Assessment: This is a very user-friendly manual that does not require readers to have a background in sleep medicine. Neophytes will get a nice overview of sleep basics and busy clinicians will find a plethora of clinical nuggets.
