Description: This 168-page softcover book is a primer on risk management, with a primary focus on transfusion medicine.
Purpose: The purpose is to "give the reader a profound understanding of risk management, not just in the context of transfusion medicine, but in healthcare generally." This worthy objective is well met by this book.
Audience: It intended for those who may be part of a governing body (e.g., board of directors) and/or with responsibility for addressing risks in the healthcare setting. It would be fantastic for residents in laboratory medicine, transfusion medicine fellows, and laboratory medicine practitioners, regardless of whether they direct the blood bank and transfusion service. It also would be enlightening to the general public. The author and contributors are credible authorities in their subject matter.
Features: This deceptively slim book packs a wealth of information on risk management. The author wrote 10 of the 15 chapters, and his expertise in risk management and related legal issues shines through loud and clear. While this book has a focus on transfusion medicine, much of it instead broadly addresses risk management — origins, concepts, integral relationship with quality systems, application, etc. Illustrative examples from the author's own experience will ring true with practicing laboratory directors everywhere (e.g., Lean Six Sigma exercise to reduce defects with send-out laboratory testing). The five chapters authored by contributors are more focused on risk management issues in transfusion medicine. Chapter seven, "Patient Blood Management: Reducing Risk by Reducing Inappropriate and Avoidable Transfusions" is absolutely fabulous — one of the most concise reviews of evidence-based transfusion indications contrasted with current practice. Two small complaints, both related to the figures. Not all figures have legends and those without them are confusing when they do not obviously relate to the accompanying text (e.g., picture of a cow in the middle of the discussion on babesiosis, p. 49; picture of an antebellum mansion on p. 103 — why was this included?). And sometimes there is no key for abbreviations used in figures (e.g., Figure 5.1 - what is SFMHS? TSS?; note this same figure was also used on p. 156, this time without a figure legend).
Assessment: This is a great introduction to risk management, with a focus on transfusion medicine. I found it fascinating and informative for my daily practice — you will, too.
