Overview

With all the enormous resources that are invested in medicine, it is sometimes a mystery why there is so much sickness still in evidence. Our life span, though higher than at any time in history, has now leveled off and has not significantly increased in the last two generations. There is a one-third increase in long-term illness in the last 20 years and a 44% increase in cancer incidence, which are not related to demographic issues. In some modern countries, the level of morbidity (defined as days off work because of sickness) has increased by two thirds in this time. Despite $1 trillion spent on cancer research in 20 years, the "War On Cancer" has recently been pronounced a complete failure by the u. s. President's Cancer Panel. Evidently we still have a long way to go. The goal of "Health for All by the Year 2000" as the World Health Organization has put it, is another forgotten dream. As ever, the answer will be found in breaking out of the old philosophical patterns and discovering the new, as yet unacceptable concepts. The problems of medicine today require a Kuhnian breakthrough into new paradigms, and new ways of thinking. And these new ways will not be mere variations of the old, but radical departures. This book, and the conference upon which it was based, is part of a search for these new pathways.

Description: This book contains the collected papers presented at the Third International Dead Sea Conference (1996) which convened to explore aspects of health and medicine. The papers include presentations on general healing concepts, concepts pertaining to immunity and mind-body, and innovative therapeutic programs.
Purpose: With these papers the editors hoped to offer "new ideas and visions in the health field" as well as stimulate critical thinking and the development of research questions. The objectives are worthy, but the book presents the papers without any analysis or summary. New ideas and research or review of the literature are presented in the papers, but not discussed or analyzed by the editors. Some papers, probably written in English by non-English speaking participants, needed editing for English grammar.
Audience: The book seems to be aimed at researchers and practitioners interested in holistic medicine. The contributors are an international collection of healthcare academics, practitioners, researchers, and patients.
Features: Many helpful tables, figures, and models are included. Most of the papers are well referenced with current articles and books. The table of contents divides the book into sections, but the sections are not introduced or discussed.
Assessment: This book is a collection of papers, some very interesting and scholarly. One of the more thorough is a review of the literature on the theoretical background and past research on bee sting therapy. The book includes theoretical articles, research articles, and case studies. A major shortcoming of this book is the lack of any analysis or discussion by the editors about the major ideas. Some of the articles are well written, others are not. Research outcomes are sometimes vague and difficult to evaluate. The book is probably most beneficial to those who attended the conference.

Papers from the October 1996 conference report on new paradigms and new methods in healing the immune system and chronic diseases. A section on general concepts examines areas such as food as medicine for body and soul, limits of specialization, and conventional and alternative definitions of health. Sections on protecting immunity and mind-body issues explore subjects including traditional Chinese medicine, hydrotherapy, nonconventional cancer therapies, and guided imagery. A final section reports on therapeutic programs using manual lymph drainage, massage, and bee venom. Unfortunately, some translations are poor. For professionals and general readers.
