Description: This manual of basic autopsy procedures places the emphasis on the narrative, but the text is accompanied with black-and-white illustrations.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide guidance to those who want to learn how to perform autopsies. Although the rate of hospital autopsies has diminished during the last few decades, there is still need for properly trained autopsy pathologists. This book will help all those who want to acquire such skills. The book meets authors' stated objectives.
Audience: The book was written mainly for pathology residents, but could also be used by practicing pathologists and pathology assistants as well. Medical students wanting more experience in the autopsy room and residents from various clinical specialties rotating in pathology during their training period will use it also. The authors are experienced pathologists and published medical writers.
Features: All the essential aspects of autopsy pathology are covered. Good tables and diagrams are useful in providing core information necessary for the practicing pathologist. It is organ-orientated with special attention to routine dissection and specialized dissection techniques. The manual describes methods and procedures of the autopsy proper.
Assessment: The best aspects of this practice-oriented book are the instructions on how to dissect various organs. The procedures are described matter-of-factly and are easy to follow. The book is much shorter that the leading manual of autopsy pathology (Ludwig, Handbook of Autopsy Practice (Humana Press, 2000)), but it is also more user friendly and easier to follow. The book is not attractive visually, which is a pity. Color photos would have been more useful than the black and white illustrations. The coverage of the essentials of autopsy is more than adequate and thus the book serves its main purpose; it will be used by many a resident as a short introductory text.
