Description: This is a pocket-sized book that serves as a quick reference for a variety of general surgery journal articles.
Purpose: The purpose is two-fold. First, it presents a framework for surgeons to critically analyze research. Second, it applies this framework to numerous journal articles, broken down by specialty. Readers can quickly gain a deeper understanding of seminal research studies, whether for the pursuit of knowledge or in preparation for a presentation. This is not an in-depth guide for research analysis (nor does it intend to be). Rather, it offers a very brief introductory section with some helpful tips on how to search for relevant research, followed by the bulk of the book comprised of select articles.
Audience: According to the authors, this is intended for surgeons, surgical residents, and medical students on their surgery rotation. It would best serve busy surgical residents who are given the task of selecting a journal article to present either in a small group or otherwise informal setting during residency. The authors are surgery attendings and surgery residents who appear to have published research in their respective fields.
Features: The book covers numerous topics in general surgery, such as trauma, vascular, breast, and GI. The selected research articles are chosen for their contribution to the field or, in some cases, because the findings are controversial and thus provide ample opportunity for group discussion. The highlight of the book is its ease of use. Each chapter has a brief introduction explaining why the journal articles were chosen, followed by a synopsis and analysis of each article.
Assessment: Overall, this book provides a nice supplement to the surgical resident's personal library. The succinct analyses include bullet points that serve as a useful preview and/or review for surgery residents who are inundated with information. It does not replace the need to read the journal article, but it is a high yield reference that allows one to peruse numerous articles that would otherwise take hours to review.
