Description: This is the fourth edition of a multiauthored text in basic pharmacology. It is not a comprehensive pharmacology text, rather it is an overview of the core pharmacology material. At the end of each chapter are review questions simulating questions found in USMLE Step 1.
Purpose: The stated purpose for this book is to be a review text for people studying for USMLE Step 1 pharmacology. This book was not designed as a comprehensive text, even though it covers most areas of pharmacology.
Audience: The text is aimed at second-year medical students and foreign graduates who are about to take USMLE Step 1.
Features: The authors are, or were, members of the department of pharmacology at University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. This edition was updated during the past three years to include new material and to conform to the new format of USMLE. The practice questions at the end of each chapter do contain the new extended matching questions (R type), but there are very few clinical vignettes found among the questions. Although there are a few tables and diagrams, this book uses these features a lot less than other publications aimed at the identical audience.
Assessment: This book is one of many in a field all aimed at the same audience. It has very little to recommend it. There is a glaring lack of an index so that one cannot find a particular drug unless one pages through the appropriate chapter. There is no way to cross reference a drug that is indicated for multiple uses. Although it is an updated text, some of the newer drugs are not to be found, and there are errors of fact throughout the text. With minimal use of charts and diagrams this book has nothing to catch the eye of the reader. There are other better texts available.
