Description: This book covers everything that nurses need to know about administering medications and monitoring patients taking medications. It has some basic anatomy and physiology (mechanism of action) of specific medications groups (classes). Each chapter has objectives, a glossary, drug profiles, nursing implications, and black box warnings. I have been waiting for this ninth edition for two years.
Purpose: It is intended for nursing students who are taking a pharmacology class. It is easy to read and contains additional teaching and learning features. There is also a supplemental study guide available for an additional cost. Most students prefer to have a hard copy of a book, although the accompanying website has excellent student and faculty resources including NCLEX-style test questions for each chapter.
Audience: This book is specifically intended for nursing students and it includes nursing precautions and interventions. The book meets the needs of the intended audience. The authors include two nurses and one PharmD.
Features: The book is colorful and lightweight, with clear and specific writing. The best aspect of the book is that it teaches by drug class while including specific diagnoses in the drug class. It includes all items expected in an undergraduate textbook including recommendations for how to use it and how to study. It contains multiple tables on adverse effects, tables for common drugs in the specific class, sections on patient-centered care, tables for interactions, and case studies, and the information is current.
Assessment: This book offers all of the needed information for administering medications to patients. I am biased toward this book because I use it to teach undergraduate pharmacology to nursing students. I have researched many books — I selected this one from among about seven books — and have found it meets the needs of the students in our program. I found Lehne's Pharmacology for Nursing Care, 10th edition, Burchum and Rosenthal (Elsevier, 2019), too complex for our purposes. This one is complete in its list of current medications within specific drug classes and it contains information on the mechanism of action, contraindications, adverse effects, black box warnings, and nursing implications. The addition of the case studies is valuable, as are the patient teaching boxes in some chapters. The updated edition is needed due to new black box warnings on many drugs.
