About the Author

Dr. Cohn is a Clinical Professor of Medicine and former Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the State University of New York - Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He is also the Director of the Preoperative Medical Consultation Clinic and Medical Consultation Service at Kings County Hospital Center, responsible for education and supervision of senior medical residents in both in-patient and ambulatory care settings, and chairs the Medicine Performance Improvement Committee at University Hospital of Brooklyn. After receiving his MD from the University of Monterrey, Dr. Cohn completed his residency in internal medicine at SUNY - Downstate Medical Center. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and is a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine and the Society of Hospital Medicine.

His clinical and research interests are focused on perioperative medicine, particularly cardiac risk evaluation and management and venous thromboembolic disease.Dr. Cohn is a frequently requested grand rounds speaker and has presented research findings and coordinated educational workshops at numerous national professional meetings (ACP, SGIM, SHM) and seminars, served as the Guest Editor for the Medical Clinics of North America, and written book chapters and articles that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals including the Annals of Internal Medicine and Journal of Hospital Medicine. He is also the editor of a book entitled Perioperative Medicine - Just the Facts (McGraw Hill, 2006) and the section editor for medical consultation in a new textbook, Comprehensive Hospital Medicine (Elsevier, 2007). Dr. Cohn has been named in Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors in the New York Metro area annually since 1997.

Description: This review of perioperative care stresses how to best manage the medical issues of patients based on the available evidence to minimize surgical risks. The bulleted format makes it very easy to glean important information.
Purpose: The purpose is to bring together the multidisciplinary perioperative information needed to treat patients. The idea is to help all physicians treating surgical patients to better understand the situation of the patient as a whole and to better communicate with one another. As sicker and sicker patients are undergoing surgery and many physicians have little knowledge of the effects of anesthesia on patient physiology and vice versa, this book is sorely needed.
Audience: The book covers the medical care of patients before, during, and after surgery and is primarily directed at those who take care of these patients either before or after surgery. Anyone involved in patient care — surgeons, internists, or anesthesiologists — will find it helpful.
Features: The first of the book's four main sections is a general overview of commonly ordered tests, how to manage patient medications when a patient is NPO, and how to prevent surgery-specific complications like thrombosis and surgical infections. The next section reviews different surgeries by organ system and the risks they pose. The third section discusses the various organ diseases, what risks they pose for the patient during surgery, and how to intervene to minimize those risks. The last section covers postsurgical complications and how to evaluate and treat them. The book is well written and the recommendations are very practical.
Assessment: This well-done book covers all the important topics with just the right amount of detail. Quite often books on this subject turn into medicine textbooks. This one stays focused on the perioperative aspects of patient care with the intent of minimizing surgical risk.
