About the Author

Christine M. Houser is a practicing physician who has extensively studied cognitive neuropsychology, with a focus on human learning and memory. Throughout her career, she has served as a Director of Training and Research, a Medical Boards Examination Consultant and author of materials for general and specialty medical boards, and a Medical Boards Examination Preparation Consultant in Family Medicine. Additionally, each volume of Dr. Houser's Practically Painless Reviews in pediatrics has been reviewed by a practicing attending pediatrician.

Description: This is the second volume of an exam or ward or practice review book, which is also a concise resource for refreshing practitioners' working clinical medical knowledge.
Purpose: The primary purpose is to provide exam or ward or practice review of clinically relevant knowledge. I particularly appreciate the Socratic approach of asking a question and then providing a concise answer.
Audience: The intended audience is medical, nursing, and nurse practitioner students, but the book could be helpful for physician assistant students as well. As we all are lifetime learners, this book is helpful for practitioners in these areas as well for exam preparation, including recertification. The author has extensive education in memory and knowledge retention so that the way she presents this information is effective.
Features: The focus in this volume 2 is on allergy/immunology, hematology/oncology, nephrology, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat, and adolescent gynecology topics. The author has recruited subspecialists to present this information in a Q and A format. It provides a quick review before an exam or on the ward when presenting and discussing a patient with the team. For those reviewing for an exam, the bold questions are popular questions for boards. Those giving a presentation for which they will need evidence/references to support their answers will have to consult a book, or other online resources, since there are no references in this book.
Assessment: For the purposes outlined by the author, this is a current and excellent exam review book. The author, with her additional educational training, has given the preparation of this review book much thought and has done an excellent job of presenting a Socratic question and answer approach to review pediatric topics for students and practitioners.
