Description: The slimness of this book on congenital and pediatric hair abnormalities is deceiving. It contains excellent insights into the finer points of making a diagnosis on a myriad of confusing and complex syndromes that can be overwhelming even to a dermatologist.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate dermatologists on properly diagnosing hair disorders in the pediatric population. Many disorders are unique to children or have a higher prevalence in children than in adults.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists.
Features: There are many color photographs, electron micrographs, and x-rays illustrating the abnormalities in hair shaft defects, clinical presentations, other ectodermal associated findings, and bony abnormalities seen in many syndromes presenting with hair problems. There is an algorithm for hypotrichoses that classifies the various types into some sort of a logical scheme to arrive at the correct diagnosis. The discussions of why the molecular defects cause the clinical abnormalities are very good. The photos are good overall, but some of them could be improved with an increase in clarity and focus. A glossary defines hair terminology.
Assessment: This book fills a unique need, demystifying congenital and pediatric hair abnormalities. It offers practical diagnostic information and makes it easier to understand some of the syndromes. It is hard to read a list of associated skin findings with an alopecia and expect any depth of comprehension to occur. The authors avoid this approach, and the book is easy to read in a few hours.
