About the Author

Alice D. Domar is an expert on stress and infertility. Having conducted numerous studies on the impact of psychosocial interventions in infertile women, Dr Domar lectures throughout the US and internationally, most recently on the importance of empathic communication, patient-centered care, patient retention, and how to work with challenging patients. Author of several books, Dr Domar was on the Board of Resolve for ten years and won the Barbara Eck Manning Award. She is the co-creator of the FertiCalm and FertiStrong mobile apps and is an editor of Fertility and Sterility.

Denny Sakkas has been IVF unit Laboratory Director, across Europe and the USA. He has extensive experience in clinical IVF and reproductive research. He is internationally recognized, having organized conferences and workshops on reproduction related topics, and is frequently invited as a speaker at major conferences worldwide. Dr Sakkas has served on the editorial board of all ESHRE journals and other major fertility journals. He has been extensively funded in his career and led research investigating many aspects of gamete and embryo biology.

Thomas L. Toth is a highly experienced clinician-scientist and a founding director of both an academic IVF program and REI fellowship training program. His primary research interest focused on understanding the fundamental scientific underpinnings of human oocyte cryopreservation and the successful translation of this know-how from bench-to-bedside. Dr Toth serves on numerous boards and also elected positions for ASRM and SART. He has lectured worldwide and has over 100 publications, reflecting his broad interest and vision in bringing innovation to the field of ART.

Description: This 170-page, black-and-white print paperback provides an overview of the latest topics in infertility evaluation and treatment. This first edition offers numerous tables and schematic figures to support the text.
Purpose: The authors' aim is to provide information regarding current mainstream and cutting-edge practices in the specialty. They also present chapters on potential future innovations in infertility care. This information is presented with an emphasis on patient-centered care. Because women undergoing infertility care often face multiple stressors, later chapters rightfully focus on psychological needs of patients and providers. This book is unique in its effective integration of the science and psychology of infertility care.
Audience: This book is directed toward physicians, nurses, embryologists, technicians, mental health professionals, and administrators and includes content for each of these professions. For infertility specialists, the book offers contemporary practices to keep them abreast of new information. As a generalist, I found it particularly helpful to set expectations for my patients prior to their referral appointment. Chapters on the psychological aspects emphasize the stresses faced by patients and present tools to identify and assist. Last, the creative chapters on integrated care and patient-centered care spur the reader to do better for their patient. Dr. Domar is a well-published and well-recognized psychologist with expertise in mind/body health. She has an integrated clinic at the Boston IVF center to support the mental health of female patients. Similarly, Drs. Toth and Sakkas are well published in their field. The supporting contributors are nationally and internationally respected experts in their chapter topics.
Features: As described, chapters cover hot topics in IVF practices. Chapters that discuss care that structures patient visits and procedures more efficiently for the patient are creative and patient centered. Several chapters describe the psychological aspects and how to integrate these needs with traditional infertility care. The last chapter discusses anticipated future breakthroughs for the specialty. Shortcomings are few. The book is sufficiently illustrated but might benefit from color in the second edition. The index could be a bit fuller.
Assessment: This book truly respected my time and is written for the active practitioner. The chapters and book are tightly edited. Each chapter's content made me look forward to the next. The table of contents is unique in its combining of current clinical practice, psychologic care, and patient-centered, day-to-day provision of care. As such, it fills a special and applauded niche.
