Description: This comprehensive overview of pancreas transplantation covers the full array of clinical topics relevant to this field.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an update on pancreas transplantation that describes the ongoing variation in clinical practice that occurs at various centers in the world. This purpose is accomplished quite nicely by the authors and editors.
Audience: The book is primarily directed at practicing transplant surgeons or those training in the field. In addition, it would be helpful to surgical residents when they are on a transplant surgery rotation. Finally, portions of this book would also be helpful to medical physicians who are involved in the care of patients that have undergone a pancreas transplant. The majority of the authors are from a single institution (University of Pittsburgh), thus this book reflects that institution's biases. However the editors also include multiple chapters at the end of the book that are single-center reports from many of the top institutions performing pancreas transplants.
Features: All aspects of pancreatic transplantation are covered from a clinical point of view. While the primary focus is on surgical aspects of pancreas transplantation and the care of the recipient following surgery, chapters also cover long-term success of the procedure and its influence on the complications of diabetes. In addition, emerging areas like islet transplantation and xenotransplantation are discussed. The book concludes with 10 chapters from various centers in the United States and Europe that describe the individual center experience with the procedure and unique aspects of their program. These chapters illustrate nicely the several variations in how this therapy is undertaken and provides readers with a broad base of insight into the field.
Assessment: This book is excellent. The chapters are well written and well referenced. The material is up to date and the various center summaries provide many different viewpoints. The editors nicely accomplish their goal of describing the ongoing variation in the practice of pancreatic transplantation.
