Description: This is the second edition of a guide to the day-to-day management of patients requiring hospice and palliative care. This edition includes new material on grief and bereavement, medical marijuana, and physician-assisted death. It follows the core curriculum of the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and, most importantly, it has been updated to reflect the most recent edition of the National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care Clinical Practice Guidelines.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide up-to-date, practical, and concise information to healthcare professionals who must provide hospice and palliative care in the U.S. As the number of patients with palliative care needs increases, the ability to provide much-needed specialist level care falls short. This requires providers and clinicians from a variety of disciplines to manage patients' and families' hospice and palliative care needs. This book gives all clinicians succinct, evidence-based information that is rapidly accessible at the bedside, in the exam room, or in the home.
Audience: The audience includes students from many healthcare disciplines, residents and fellows, nurse practitioners and physicians, and attending nurse practitioners and physicians, both at the generalist and specialist level. The editors are international experts in hospice and palliative care. The chapter authors are credible clinicians in their fields, some of whom have attained national and international recognition for their work.
Features: The book covers topics ranging from specific symptom management assessment and treatment, to disease-specific assessment and management, to communication and self-care. While all chapters offer helpful information, the chapter on prevention and management of burnout and compassion fatigue in healthcare providers (chapter 37) is worth a specific mention. The rate of burnout and compassion fatigue among healthcare providers generally, and palliative care providers specifically, is a significant problem which often receives little attention in the workplace and among the clinicians themselves. The author of the chapter has done an exceptional job identifying the magnitude of the problem, and ways to successfully address it. One obvious shortcoming is the section on physician-assisted death, which the book incorrectly titles Physician Assisted Suicide, a phrase laden with bias, and one not used in the states where this end of life option is legal.
Assessment: As the number of patients requiring palliative and supportive care has increased, so too have the number of books written on the subject. Most are well written and thorough, but very few are written in such a succinct and easy-to-read manner as this one. This book should be considered a resource for clinicians of all backgrounds and all levels of experience, from novice to expert.
