Description: This is the eighth edition of an excellent resource for medical students on their obstetrics clerkship that aligns with the educational objectives of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO). The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The primary objective is to provide a one-stop resource for all things related to obstetrics and gynecology for medical students, and this update incorporates discussions of ethics and safety.
Audience: The audience is medical students, and the book makes appropriate use of illustrations and highlighting to reinforce key concepts.
Features: The book is clear, and the index is very helpful to direct readers to specific areas. Clinical cases at the start of every chapter provide a framework for learners. There are sufficient illustrations to emphasize important aspects and highlighting that helps reinforce key concepts. The chapter on maternal fetal physiology is concise and clearly written with figures and tables to elucidate the material. The chapter on preconception in antepartum care provides new recommendations that are appropriately attributed. The information on antenatal surveillance with nonstress tests is accurate and easy to understand. Helpful tables depict fetal exposure from common radiological procedures. It is easy to see medical students using this as a reference throughout their rotation.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for medical students that is visually engaging and medically accurate. There's likely a reason this book is in its eighth edition and has remained so popular with students. The information is accurate, easy to comprehend, and presented in a way that promotes extended periods of study. Strongly recommended for medical students and strongly recommend correlation with the APGO educational objectives.
