Purpose: According to the editor-in-chief of the series (Treatments That Work), David Barlow, "the program described in this manual presents the latest version of one of the most advanced treatment programs yet developed for problems with alcohol, tobacco, or drugs. This program recognizes that these problems have both biological and psychological causes, and that no single program will work the same for everyone. Therefore it is meant to be flexibly adapted to where the individual is on the long road to recovery, from just getting started through preventing relapse."
Audience: The book is meant for the individual suffering from problems related to alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs. It is meant to be completed and shared with the therapist, who would be using the companion therapist guide. Both authors have worked in the addictions field for many years and have published numerous works.
Features: The three parts of the workbook cover an overview of substance use problems and assessment; change issues and strategies; and relapse prevention, progress measurement, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Most of the chapters have homework, worksheets that the client can complete. The book is written at a level that is easily comprehended. It uses a nice step-by-step approach, beginning with understanding addiction to dealing with relapse prevention. Case examples elucidate the material. The chapters are short but full of information, which is important so clients will not be bored or overwhelmed.
Assessment: This is a wonderful workbook for clients written by experts in the field of addictions. It is easy to read and meant to be used along with the therapist manual in a therapeutic relationship. Of course, this book could be used alone as a self-help tool. However, the optimal situation would be either as part of individual or group therapy. The homework assignments (worksheets) are very practical and help extend the therapy session into everyday life. Hopefully, it will translate into behavioral change, i.e. abstinence and productive and fulfilling living. This book reflects the latest research, thus justifying replacing the previous edition.
