A poem and song that reveals the beauty/meaning of its prose as you move through it. I couldn't help but feel that was intentional as the author, clearly finds truth in innocence. It's hard to see and understand the beauty of the moment until later. Or sadly, the danger. I was struck feeling how the innocence of good intention is often ruined through traumatized men in traumatized institutions. This was beautifully written and touched on so many important topics about race, class and gender in the building of nationhood. It's always cool to see black women and marginalised peoples take on forms that scream whiteness, especially the epic-like ode. It does important corrective work like canon re-building and challenging. Sometimes however, the form felt constraining.

I also read as an English teacher, looking for poems that will inspire thought and writing in my classroom. There were also strong poems for that purpose.
