Description: This is a unique book that that provides concise, pragmatic, case-based patient vignettes addressing assessment and management issues related to patients presenting with obesity.
Purpose: In contrast to other general books on the subject, the authors wanted to provide a short, reader-friendly manual that contains insights and practical strategies for the assessment and treatment of patients with obesity.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is intended for obesity medicine specialists and all physicians who treat patients struggling with weight management. Other providers such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants also would find the book useful. However, it is not an introductory book.
Features: This 153-page pocket book is written by 11 clinicians (eight of whom are physicians) who work at the Comprehensive Weight Control Center at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. The 16 chapters are evenly divided into eight parts that showcase the authors' area of expertise: metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance syndromes, type II diabetes and obesity, psychiatric medication-induced weight gain, behavioral interventions, bariatric surgery, pharmacotherapy for obesity, and genetic syndromes with obesity. The chapters are short (averaging 6 to 10 pages) and uniformly structured into a case presentation, assessment and diagnosis, management, outcome, and references. They also contain a Clinical Pearls and Pitfalls call-out box. The book is well written and easy to understand.
Assessment: Overall, this book is very interesting, and it contains insights and treatment strategies from experts in the field. It is unique as a clinically based casebook and contains important and practical information for seasoned clinicians. However, the selected topics are quite narrow. Readers who are looking for coverage of more basic areas on biology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, physical activity and behavioral change theories, and pediatrics will need to look elsewhere.
