Description: This brief manual is an overview of the common and perplexing problem of obesity, its treatment and long-term management.
Purpose: The book is intended to provide primary care physicians with practical information about the treatment and management of obese patients. Given the often frustrating nature of this pervasive chronic problem, such a work is most welcome.
Audience: Although intended for busy office practitioners, the manual would be beneficial to hospitalists and medical students and residents as well. The author is an internationally recognized general practitioner from Great Britain who is a noted authority on obesity management.
Features: The problem of obesity is approached from the standpoint of its epidemiology and causation, with particular attention to its relationship to western culture and industrialization. Treatment options, including medications and surgical interventions, are fully covered and described. Charts, graphs, and tables are all helpful, but not overdone. The book is only limited by its brevity.
Assessment: This short book packs much useful information into its 100 pages. The often neglected problem of obesity is rapidly becoming one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for numerous disease entities, and physicians must become more attuned to its implications and management. This book is an excellent start in that regard for many busy practitioners.
