Description: Part of a series of books that describe various qualitative research designs, this one is devoted to nursing research using ethnography.
Purpose: The aim, according to the authors, is "to provide specific information to guide graduate students and experienced nurses who are novices in the designs represented in the series from the point of view of our constituents - patients and their families."
Audience: The intended audience is graduate students and experienced nurses who want to use ethnography for nursing research studies.
Features: The first three chapters detail basic information about ethnography: an overview, the state of the art, and ethnographic methods. There is a chapter by a professor on "how to do ethnography" and a chapter by a faculty member describing her student experiences using ethnography. The remaining chapters describe ethnographic studies that were done in the U.S. and other countries including Nicaragua, the Netherlands, Ghana, and Mexico. The unique appendixes include a list of journals that publish qualitative research, essential elements for a qualitative proposal, writing qualitative research proposals, and an outline for a research proposal. However, these are the same appendixes that appear in the other books in the series.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for researchers who want to conduct nursing research using ethnography. It contains worthwhile basic information about the design and many good examples of the use of the design.
