Description: This book presents the basic steps of the research process and the guidelines for critiquing the steps of the research process. For this sixth edition, the content for evidence-based practice has been increased including emphasis throughout the chapters. The previous edition was 2002.
Purpose: The purpose is to help students develop the skills to understand the research process and to critically read, evaluate, and apply research findings in practice. This is a worthwhile goal, since future practitioners will be providing care based on theory and research evidence.
Audience: The target audience is undergraduate nursing students learning the research process and critiquing skills. It can be a resource for master's and doctoral students wanting a concise review of the research and critiquing processes. The authors and contributors are experts in the field of research.
Features: This book concisely covers the steps of the research process in four parts. Part I presents an overview of the research process including the role of research in nursing, integrating evidence-based practice, developing research questions and hypotheses, the literature review, and theoretical framework. Part II focuses on qualitative research including the approaches and evaluation of qualitative research. Part II focuses on quantitative research processes and evaluation. Part IV focuses on evidence-based practice. New to this edition is the increased coverage of evidence-based practice and three chapters have been devoted to this topic. Evidence-based practice tips are included in each chapter. Evidence-based examples have been updated. For selected terms, the example glossary included examples from the text in addition to the definition. A full-color design makes reading more appealing. Note that the Table of Contents contains several errors primarily with page numbers and chapter headings.
Assessment: This will be useful to the target audience. It covers the basic information needed to be a consumer of nursing research. The change of the title to reflect evidence-based practice and increased coverage of that area should prepare the BSN graduate with a good foundation for evidence-based practice.
