Purpose: The purpose is to provide a thorough review of nuclear medicine as it applies to psychiatric disorders for anyone interested in the neurosciences. These are worthy objectives that the authors have not only met but also exceeded.
Audience: This very well written review on nuclear medicine applications in psychiatry is meant for researchers, psychiatrists, radiologist/nuclear medicine specialists, and psychologists.
Features: Nuclear medicine techniques are being explored in all realms of neuroscience from drug discovery and development by the pharmaceutical companies to the diagnosis of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other psychiatric disorders. The authors give a great overview of this fast advancing field both from a technical perspective and a clinical perspective. Almost all psychiatric topics are covered, giving the reader a basic understanding of this field. Information is presented in an easy to read format that both the researcher and the practitioner can understand. The practitioner in particular will benefit from the clinical aspects section of each chapter. The format is very pleasing, with special information presented in tables and graphs. The technical section comprehensively details instrumentation, perfusion tracers, radioligands, and their application to both animal and human research. Special topics on techniques in animal research, children, SLE, and personality disorders stand out. Functional topics such as aggression, hypnosis, and apathy including forensic applications are also covered. All of the commonly used modalities, PET, SPECT, and fMRI, with appropriate clinical and research data are referenced. References are well cited and current literature is used.
Assessment: This is an extremely well written review on nuclear medicine as it applies to psychiatry. Starting from the basics of instrumentation, the authors have successfully covered the entire spectrum of psychiatric disorders and have done an admirable job.
