Description: Part of a long established series, The Requisites, this book discusses imaging of the head and neck, brain and spine. It is intended as a review of key imaging concepts and findings in these regions.
Purpose: It is not intended as an exhaustive review of all possible diagnoses encountered in neuroradiology. Rather, it provides brief discussions of key nuggets of information on a variety of entities commonly encountered in clinical practice. The preface indicates that portions of this edition have been rewritten to be more relevant to current clinical practice, while out of date information has been removed and new content has been added.
Audience: The audience is largely composed of trainees, i.e. radiology residents and neuroradiology fellows. However, the work is written at such a level that general radiologists will find it useful. The authors are well known, particularly Dr. Yousem.
Features: The book covers a good breadth of topics commonly encountered in neuroimaging. It nicely divides the topics into sections on disorders related to brain, spine, and head and neck. The chapter on brain trauma covers the important entities seen in any emergency room and identifies important topics. The section on sinonasal imaging also provides good coverage of all major entities encountered. As with prior editions of the work, the authors inject humor into the prose and captions. While this is amusing, it distracts from the importance of the topics and makes for somewhat laborious reading.
Assessment: As with all offerings in this series, this book provides a superficial but comprehensive overview of the most relevant entities. It is somewhat improved over previous versions, but it still suffers from the injected humor.
