About the Author

John Hansen is Professor Emeritus, a recent past-Chair for Medical Education in Neurobiology and Anatomy, and Associate Dean for Admissions at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Hansen was awarded the first annual Presidential Diversity Award by the University of Rochester in recognition of his 24 years of commitment and dedicated efforts to increase the recruitment, retention and graduation of medical school candidates from diverse backgrounds.

Dr. Hansen, researches peripheral and central dopaminergic systems, neural plasticity and neural inflammation. He is a recipient of an NIH Research Career Development Award and has received numerous teaching awards including Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award given annually by the AAMC to nationally recognized medical educators.

Professor Hansen is author of over 110 research publications, book chapters, and books. He has been Co-editor of the journal Clinical Anatomy and the lead consulting editor of Netter’s Atlas of Human Anatomy (2-7th editions). He continues to author Netter’s Anatomy Flash Cards, Netter’s Clinical Anatomy and Netter's Anatomy Coloring Book.

Description: This book covers the human body system by system. The website allows users to search the complete contents of the book as well as view completed coloring pages done by others for reference. The enhanced ebook allows users to access all of the text and figures on a variety of devices. This is the third edition, after the second debuted in 2019.
Purpose: The book's purpose is to reinforce users' knowledge of structures, pathways, and relationships through an active and engaging review tool. Color is a known beneficial learning tool, and coloring books are popular with many students from undergraduates through those in allied health graduate programs. In this regard, the book is needed. The online aspects allow access on numerous devices and offer pre-colored pictures to assist with any clarity issues users might have.
Audience: The book is directed toward those taking anatomy courses or who are just curious about how the body works. The left page of each two-page spread contains textual information clearly written and summarized in tabular form, which can be added through color to the accompanying diagram on the right page. I have seen students at all levels using these coloring books. This book meets the needs of the intended audience and, being a third edition, clearly attests to its demand. The author is a well-known clinical anatomist who has created and edited numerous textbooks from the Netter compendium.
Features: The best feature of this book is the accompanying written material on the left page that is diagrammatically shown on the right page. The author uses summaries, tables, and clinical scenarios to reinforce the anatomical relationships/structures being colored. This reinforces high-yield information with structural/relational knowledge. After all, that is what anatomy is and why this book is so well liked by students. Users are not simply coloring for stress release, but are learning factual information as they add color to differentiate structures, pathways, etc.
Assessment: This coloring book offers students the ability to learn anatomy while adding color to diagrams to differentiate structures. This is what anatomy is all about — relationships of one structure to another. There are other anatomy coloring books, but none that utilize the diagrams and clinical inter-relationships that the Netter team of artists develop at Elsevier. The author has made optimal use of this relationship.
