Description: This book is designed to be used in laboratory dissection training, specifically for rehabilitation professions such as physical and occupational therapy. The focus is primarily on the musculoskeletal system, more than standard gross anatomy. In addition to the amply illustrated text, the publisher maintains a website which provides access to an image collection, as well as instructor materials such as syllabi and test banks.
Purpose: The purpose is to aid students in the rehabilitation professions in moving through the dissection of major body regions in a progressive fashion. Such a book would certainly be a useful adjunct to dissection, especially where students are actively involved in the process rather than where they view prosections.
Audience: Beyond students in rehabilitation training, this book would also find a good audience in osteopathic medicine and chiropractic education. It is directed at graduate level training.
Features: While the book primarily covers the dissection of the musculoskeletal system, it also includes introductory material on good dissecting technique. For each chapter (with each covering a different body region) there is an initial case scenario which is used to drive the focus of that chapter. Each chapter also provides an anatomical overview as well as information on embryogenesis and clinical notes which show how anatomical issues link up with clinical issues. The book is amply illustrated, with all figures of a uniform high quality. Exercises for each chapter are provided, so that students can apply information learned to actual clinical scenarios. In this sense, the book acts like a workbook, to be written in and used. The web-based material is of special use for teaching faculty, as it provides access to a wealth of tools which may be used in teaching this information. This is an excellent addition to this book. The only real shortcoming I see is the lack of actual references. A group of standard textbooks is mentioned in the introductory material, but no citations are actually made.
Assessment: I enjoyed this book and wish it had been available all those years ago when I spent time doing dissection. The logical organization and comprehensive coverage is quite good, and I think this book will get a favorable reception in those healthcare fields that focus on the musculoskeletal system. The material is supported by solid web-based material and there are few negatives. I recommend this book.
