Overview

A fifty-year historical account of building a Fire Department and combining it with an active ambulance service. The technical requirements, the administrative hurdles, and the political management required for Emergency Services were astounding. The account's perspective was from a former Fire Chief/EMS Director appointed by five elected Commissioners. It includes volunteer and career interviews, archival accounts, media reports, and dispatch statistics to measure the phenomenal growth of services over 50 years. It is an example of leading a 14-station Emergency Service for a 400-mile response area and population of over 30,000 citizens in a suburban/rural county in Middle Georgia.

About the Author

Glenn Dorner was the Chief of the Monroe County Emergency Services 2000-2006. His emergency experiences included volunteer/career firefighting with Forsyth, Monroe County, and Macon-Bibb County Fire Departments 1975-1983. He was a resident instructor of interior firefighting at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center/Georgia Fire Academy 1998-2000. EMT Dorner performed EMS work with Monroe County Hospital. He served as US Army Medic from 1983-1985 and as 18D, Special Forces Medic from 1985-1991 with multiple overseas deployments. He graduated from the Georgia College School of Nursing with a BSN. Commissioned as an officer and served tours mostly in Emergency Departments at Army Hospitals. He returned to Georgia and became Director of Emergency Services (Fire/EMS) for Monroe County, Georgia. Returning to active duty service in 2007, served as Head Nurse of the Level II Trauma Center at Madigan Army Medical Center, Washington. Deployed to Iraq 2009-10 with 47th Combat Support Hospital. Retired in 2016 as Lieutenant Colonel with 25 years of active duty. Graduating with honors, he completed a Master of History from the American Military University. Currently serves as a Director for the National Fire Heritage Center, Maryland, focusing on archival activities. In 2022, he commuted from Washington State to Georgia, researching to chronicle the history of the Monroe County Firefighters/EMTs. Currently consulting for departmental historical review and strategic planning.
