Description: This book reviews the medical care of renal transplant patients. It offers a needed up-to-date overview of this topic.
Purpose: This is a reasonably comprehensive overview, with as much evidence-based data as possible, of the full range of problems encountered in the medical management of kidney recipients before, during, and after transplantation. Given the fast evolving nature of the subject, a review of the latest advances is much needed.
Audience: This book is written not only for nephrologists and transplant surgeons, but also to general internists who are increasingly taking care of transplant patients. It is also very useful for nephrology trainees. Over 70 authors contributed to this book, many of whom are international authorities.
Features: This book has several unique chapters: extracorporeal blood purification in renal transplantation; post-transplant liver disease; post-transplant ENT complications and the approach to the highly sensitized patient. There is information specific to pediatric, geriatric, and pregnant patients. Also, psychosocial, gender, and ethical issues are properly addressed. The data reflects current UNOS policy regarding cadaver kidney allocation. Tables and algorithms are simple to read and quite helpful for quick reading. References are as up-to-date as possible in a book (mostly 2003).
Assessment: This is an easy to read, logically constructed, and quite up-to-date book on renal transplantation. This book has found a niche, somewhere between the encyclopedia of renal transplantation, Kidney Transplantation: Principles and Practice, 5th edition by Morris (W.B. Saunders, 2001), and the hands-on Handbook of Kidney Transplantation, 4th edition, by Danovitch (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005).
