Description: All aspects of latex contact dermatitis are covered in this extremely technical book. The authors have covered virtually every piece of data on latex allergy and have dedicated numerous chapters to immunology of the problem, patch testing, and treatment. The chemical compounds in natural and synthetic rubber as well as oxidants and substances that can degrade the gloves are presented. Occupational physicians will want to consult this book.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to aid in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of latex allergy.
Audience: The audience is occupational physicians and dermatologists whose practice is composed of patients with contact dermatitis in the workplace.
Features: The strength of the book is the exhaustive coverage of the material. The manufacturing process of rubber is discussed in great detail. Chemical methods employed to quantitate rubber proteins are probably going to be best understood by a chemist.
Assessment: If you deal with a great deal of patients with contact dermatitis you will want to refer to this book. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requirements on the standards for manufacturing medical gloves are also discussed.
